A coating does its job in a layer that you often cannot see. Thickness, composition, adhesion, and phase all affect whether a film protects, conducts, or eventually fails. Much of the useful information is found at the surface and at the interface underneath it. What We Analyze in Thin Films & Coatings

Coating work mainly looks at thickness, chemistry, and how well the film holds to the surface. We measure the film thickness and uniformity, check its composition and phase, and test adhesion and hardness. We also look at the interface when a coating starts to fail. How We Test Thin Films & Coatings

Coating work usually combines a thickness or imaging method with surface chemistry and adhesion testing, and we scope the combination your question needs. The methods below are the ones we reach for most, and each links to its own page.

Surface Analysis:

We look at the chemistry and composition of the outermost part of the film, including contamination and depth profiles through multilayer coatings. This shows what each layer is made of.

Imaging & Microscopy:

Cross-section imaging is used to measure coating thickness and check the interface, porosity, and other defects. It gives a clear view of how the coating sits on the substrate.

Elemental Analysis:

EDS, XRF, and ICP methods can be used to check film composition and trace impurities. This is useful for process control and identifying possible contamination.

Structural Characterization:

X-ray diffraction is used to check phase, crystallinity, texture, and residual stress in the film. High residual stress can contribute to cracking and delamination.

Mechanical Testing:

We measure coating hardness and modulus using instrumented indentation, and test adhesion using scratch or pull-off methods. These tests show how well the coating can handle normal use and handling.

Corrosion & Environmental Testing:

We test how protective coatings perform under salt spray and other environmental exposure. This helps show where a coating starts to break down and how well it holds up.

Failure Analysis:

We look at whether the failure was caused by poor adhesion, interface contamination, residual stress, or a problem during processing. The findings are reported with the supporting evidence behind the conclusion.

Can you measure coating thickness?

Yes. We measure thickness by cross-sectional microscopy for a direct view, and by magnetic or eddy-current gauges for non-destructive checks. We report values and uniformity against your specification, and can profile a multilayer stack layer by layer.

Can you test coating adhesion?

Yes. Tape, cross-cut, scratch and pull-off methods measure adhesion depending on the coating and substrate. We recommend the method that fits your system and report the result against the acceptance criteria you work to.

Can you find why a coating delaminated?

Yes. We combine surface analysis of the interface, cross-sectional microscopy, and residual-stress measurement to determine whether the cause was contamination, poor adhesion, stress, or a process error, and report the root cause. Send the failed part unaltered.
