In simple terms, optical and appearance testing measures the visual and optical properties of a material: color in a defined color space, gloss as specular reflectance, haze and transmittance for transparent materials, and indices for whiteness and yellowness. Spectrophotometers and gloss meters replace subjective judgment with numbers so that appearance can be specified, controlled, and compared objectively.
