Optical and appearance testing quantifies how a material looks and how it transmits light. What is Optical & Appearance Testing?

In simple terms, optical and appearance testing measures the visual and optical properties of a material: color in a defined color space, gloss as specular reflectance, haze and transmittance for transparent materials, and indices for whiteness and yellowness. Spectrophotometers and gloss meters replace subjective judgment with numbers so that appearance can be specified, controlled, and compared objectively.

Color Measurement (Spectrophotometry)

Measures color in CIE Lab and related spaces and computes color difference against a standard, replacing visual judgment with numbers.

Gloss

Measures specular reflectance at standard angles, quantifying how glossy or matte a surface is.

Haze and Transmittance

Measures luminous transmittance and haze of transparent and translucent materials, important for optical clarity.

Spectral Transmittance and Reflectance

Measures how a material transmits or reflects light across wavelengths, for coatings, films, and glass.

Yellowness and Whiteness Index

Quantifies discoloration and yellowing, often used to track degradation after heat or UV exposure.

Distinctness of Image and High-Gloss Appearance.

Characterizes the visual quality of high-gloss surfaces beyond a single gloss number.
