The process by which a material ignites, burns, and spreads flame indicates whether it relates to a device housing, a vehicle interior, or a building. Fire and flammability testing measures ignition resistance, flame spread, heat release, and smoke, and classifies materials against recognized ratings. What Is Fire And Flammability Testing?

Understanding fire and flammability testing involves evaluating how materials respond to ignition and burning. Some methods classify a material by a rating, such as UL 94 for plastics. Other methods measure specific fire properties: the oxygen concentration needed to sustain burning, how fast flame spreads, how much heat and smoke a material releases, and how it resists ignition sources. Together, they characterize fire performance for design and qualification.

UL 94 Flammability Classification

Rates plastic materials by burning behavior, from HB to V-0, for parts in devices and appliances. It is the most widely specified plastics flammability rating.

Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI)

Measures the minimum oxygen concentration that sustains combustion, a sensitive comparative index for ranking formulations.

Vertical and Horizontal Burn

Standard burn-rate tests that measure how a plastic or material burns and self-extinguishes in a defined orientation.

Flame Spread and Surface Burning

Measures how flame spreads across a material surface, used in building and transportation applications.

Cone Calorimetry and Heat Release

Measures heat release rate and related fire parameters, a key input to fire modeling and material development.

Smoke Density

Measures the smoke a material generates while burning, important where visibility and toxicity matter.

Glow-Wire and Small-Flame Ignition

Evaluates the ignition resistance of electrical components to hot-wire and small-flame sources.

FAQs Fire & Flammability

Can you test a plastic to UL 94?

Yes. We run the UL 94 flammability methods and report the resulting classification, from HB to V-0. Note that a UL Listing or Mark is a certification we do not issue; we report the measured rating.

Which flammability test do I need?

It depends on the application and the standard. Plastics typically use UL-94, formulations are compared by oxygen index, and heat release uses cone calorimetry. Tell us the end use, and we recommend the method.

Can you compare the flammability of two formulations?

Yes. Limiting oxygen index and burn-rate methods rank formulations under identical conditions, which is a common material-development request.
