What Is Corrosion & Environmental Testing?

In this type of corrosion and environmental testing, it is evaluated how materials respond to corrosive and environmental exposure. Some methods accelerate real conditions in a chamber, such as salt spray and humidity cycling. Others measure corrosion directly, such as electrochemical polarization that gives corrosion rate and mechanism, or immersion tests that track mass loss. Together they rank resistance, reproduce service conditions, and explain why a material corroded.

Salt Spray (Fog) Testing

When both stress and a corrosive environment are combined, it is to assess susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking and hydrogen-related cracking, critical in oil, gas, and pressure applications.

Humidity and Environmental Exposure

Temperature and humidity cycling that evaluates the environmental durability of materials, coatings, and assemblies.

How long does salt spray or corrosion testing take?

This depends on the method as well as the exposure your specification calls for. Salt spray runs from 24 hours to well over 1,000 hours, and cyclic and immersion tests run to a defined schedule. Because exposure sets the timeline, we confirm the duration with you and state it in the quote.

Which corrosion test is right for my alloy?

It totally relies on the environment and the failure you are guarding against. General ranking often uses salt spray or immersion, localized corrosion uses pitting and crevice methods, and cracking risk uses stress-corrosion tests. Describe the service conditions, and we recommend the method.

Can you find the mechanism behind a corrosion failure?

Yes. We identify corrosion products and the mechanism, whether pitting, stress-corrosion cracking, or galvanic attack, combining corrosion analysis with microscopy and composition. Preserve the corrosion products and send the part unaltered.
